On behalf of the MN Veteran community, I would like to
thank the city of Orono and especially Gabriel Jabbour, Mayor White, and
the other local officials for inviting us to the Big Island event yesterday.
Just a few years back, many in the local veteran community were outraged
that a small group of veterans and City officials were on a path to
“destroy” veterans hallowed grounds…. But those close to the center of the
action were clearly aware of the vision, and forward thinking of the City of
Orono officials…. And aware of their promise that MN veterans had a
prominent place in that vision. Yesterday, in a clear show of partnership,
the vision you shared with us became quite clear. Visions are described as a
picture in the distance wrapped in clouds and fog, hard to make out… but
clearly there, and time and focus will lift the clouds/fog… and hopefully a
real picture will emerge.
Well, yesterday, on a clear sunny day, you shared with the veterans, a
clear picture…. A beautiful park in its natural state on a beautiful lake
sitting in the middle of a community who are clearly embracing the jewel
they have…. And at the same time, loading up some veterans on the Minnehaha,
and taking them on a trip to the island with a message.. “ Gentlemen, here
is “your” island park… we welcome you back, and ask that you and your
veteran friends and families, along with our community use it, enjoy it and
come back often”.
WOW…. We are proud of you.. and we ( The Commissioner, the American Legion,
the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the
Disabled American Vets and all veterans who we serve ) thank you for what
you have done for us. You have not only given us our Island back…. You have
left us in a MUCH better position to serve our MN veterans Statewide.
Please share this message with your City officials and your community.
Sincerely;
Your Friends… The MN Veterans
