WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT - TREE REMOVAL
Orono has ordinances (Sec 78-283;
78-577; 78-673) intended to preserve the natural wooded character of the
City's many miles of lakeshore. Here are some guidelines to follow:
A City Permit is required
to cut any live tree with a diameter of 6" or greater that is located
within 75' of the shoreline.
Inspection by City staff is required, to confirm the
reasons for removal. Removal of a dead trees doesn't require a
permit, but they must still be inspected prior to removal.
Removal of live trees requires
replacement on a tree-for-tree basis, at the same setback from the
shore as the trees removed.
Intensive vegetation clearing
within 75' of the shoreline,
on steep slopes and in bluff areas is prohibited. Limited clearing
is allowed to provide a view of the lake from the residence.
However, you should discuss the extent of your planned removal with the
City Planners & Inspector prior to starting.
If you have any further questions, contact
the City Planners or Inspector to clarify your questions.
