The Orono Police Department adheres to all guidelines set forth by the MN Peace Officer Standards &Training board (POST) for training and hiring. All interested in becoming a police officer need to have a minimum of a two year college degree. Many agencies are also requiring a candidate to be at least 21years old before considered for.
All candidates for a sworn police officer position need to pass a written test, physical agility test, psychological and medical exams, thorough background investigation and oral interviews. On top of the mentioned items we also look for the following traits:
- Honesty and Integrity
- Self-initiation and drive to accomplish tasks
- A desire to learn
- Good verbal and written communication
- Ability to effectively work with community members and businesses
- A positive attitude
