GENERAL INFORMATION


Since April 30, 2002, Minnesota has permitted the sale, possession and use of some non-explosive and non-aerial consumer fireworks.  Not all fireworks are legal, however, and it is important to know the difference: Check the grids below and if you have further questions check the links below or with our City Clerk.
 
bulletYou must be 18 years old to buy fireworks, and must be verified by a photo identification at the time of purchase.
bulletConsumers may not use fireworks in parks, roads, alleys, schools, government property or public property.

Orono requires permits for display and sale of fireworks.  Contact our City Clerk Lin Vee (952) 249-4600 with any questions you may have.

bulletAny fireworks that are explosive
   
bulletOther sparkling items which are non-explosive and non-aerial, including:
bulletCylindrical fountain (shower of sparks, smokes, and/or whistling)
bulletCone fountain (similar to above)
bulletIlluminating torch
bulletWheel (attached to post or tree, emits a shower of sparks and/or whistling)
bulletGround spinners (similar to above, only placed on ground)
bulletFlitter sparkler (narrow paper tube, emits color and sparks)
 
bulletNovelty Items, including:
bulletsnakes
bulletglow worms
bulletsmoke devices
bullettrick noise makers (paper streamers, party poppers, string poppers, snappers, and drop pops)
 
bulletAny fireworks that are aerial, these include:
bulletfirecrackers of any size
bulletladyfingers
bulletsky rockets
bulletbottle rockets
bulletmissile-type rockets
bullethelicopters, aerial spinners, planes, UFOs
bulletroman candles
bulletmines or shells (heavy cardboard or paper tubes attached to a base with propel stars, balls, or repots in the air when ignited)
bulletchasers
bulletparachutes
bullet1.3G display (special or class B) fireworks
bulletaerial shells
bullettheatrical pyrotechnics (see MN state statute 624.20 to 624.25)

      

  Note:  There are restrictions regarding the amount of chemical or explosive mixture allowed per item.  For specifics, please refer to Minnesota State Statute 624.20   The above fireworks are illegal to sell, possess, or use unless a permit has been issued by the local jurisdiction (City Clerk) and the person in possession is a state certified operator.
