     Enjoying activities near any water body can increase the risk of drowning.  Read over these tips to help you be better prepared to enjoy lake activities.
 

FACT & TIPS ABOUT WATER SAFETY


Facts:
 
bulletDrowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury-related death (after car accidents) for children younger than 14 years.  It's the number-one cause of unintentional injury-related deaths for kids 1 to 4 years of age.
 
bulletNearly 1,000 children die every year by drowning.
 
bulletOver 1,500 children and teens die every year in the U.S. from drowning.
 
bulletDrowning can occur in as little as 2-5 minutes after your head goes under the water.

What Happens:

bulletPeople drown when too much water gets into their lungs.  When that happens, the lungs can't carry enough oxygen to the brain and the rest of the body.

Tips:

bulletLearn to swim it may help save your life
bulletNever swim alone.
bulletWatch out for weeds and grass, which can trap even a good swimmer.
bulletWhen boating, always wear a life jacket.
bulletDon't swim close to piers.
bulletStay away from lowhead dams.  They have claimed the lives of almost 40 Minnesotans in the last twenty years.
