INFORMATION TO READ - BEFORE REMOVING AQUATIC PLANTS

Aquatic plants and natural shorelines provide habitat for fish and wildlife, help maintain water quality and protect shorelines from erosion.  Changing the shoreline or improperly removing aquatic plants can seriously damage the lake in the long term.

Lakeshore owners who are considering projects that would alter their shoreline or lake bottom should review the DNR Division of Waters permit requirements before any work begins.  For shoreline alteration only, check with both the DNR and City of Orono Zoning Department before any work begins.  Remember the rule of thumb; no work within 0-75' zone.

Permits are also required by the Minnehaha Creed Watershed District (MCWD) whether or not you are located near water resources such as wetlands, ponds, creeks, streams and lakes.  Check the MCWD website to see what permits you may need for shoreline or aquatic alterations.

AQUATIC PLANT REMOVAL - WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW!

While cutting or pulling submerged vegetation in a small area for recreation is allowed without a permit, many activities require an Aquatic Plant Management permit.  Most permits are valid for one year.  Please check the links below to pull permits.

Projects that require a permit include:

bulletUsing herbicides or algae herbicides to control aquatic plans in public waters.

bulletRemoving emergent vegetation, like bulrush, cattails or wild rice.

bulletRemoving floating leaf vegetation, like water lilies, in an area larger than a channel 15 feet wide extending to open water.

bulletCutting, pulling or mechanically controlling vegetation in an area larger than 2,500 square feet or wider than 50 feet.

bulletRemoving or relocating a free-floating bog of any size.

bulletInstalling or operating an automated plant control device (such as the Crary Weed Roller, Beach Groomer or Lake Sweeper).

Projects that do not require a permit include:

bulletCutting or pulling submerged vegetation from an area that does not extend more than 50 feet along the shore, or more than one half of your frontage width, whichever is smaller.  The cleared area may not exceed 2,500 square feet.

bulletCutting or pulling floating leaf plants, like water lilies, to create a channel 15 feet wide extending to open-water.  More extensive removal requires a permit.

bulletCut or pulled vegetation must be removed from the water and the cleared area must remain in the same place each year.
