"The only effective method to prevent methane emissions from landfills is to stop biodegradable materials from entering landfills."

"The good news is that landfill alternatives such as composting are readily available and cost‑effective. Compost has the added benefit of adding organic matter to soil, sequestering carbon, improving plant growth and reducing water use ‑ all important to stabilizing the climate. Composting is thus vital to restoring the climate and our soils and should be front and center in a national strategy to protect the climate in the short term."

-BioCycle magazine, August 2008

We are pleased to announce the availability of Organics Recycling, an exciting new recycling opportunity for Orono residents!  Now you’ll be able to turn a portion of your trash into usable soil.  The City of Orono has obtained a grant from Hennepin County to promote the collection of the “ORGANICS” portion of your trash.  Household organics are composted and made into soil, rather than burned or placed in landfills.

About one-quarter of a typical Orono household’s waste is food scraps and non-recyclable paper.  When treated as trash, this material is landfilled or burned.  Both of these methods are less desirable environmentally than turning our trash into useful compost.  Presently, of the five trash haulers licensed in Orono, Randy’s Sanitation & Vintage Waste are the haulers offering the organics recycling service.
