Background on Trash Collection in Orono
Residential garbage collection in the city of Orono
works on a subscription basis. Each household must establish a contract
with a garbage hauler that is licensed to collect in Orono. Upon receiving
a grant from Hennepin County, the City has been working with its licensed
haulers to offer our residents the option of recycling the organics portion
of their household waste. The city has met and discussed starting an
organics programs with all its licensed haulers. Presently, two of our
five licensed haulers is able to provide organics recycling.
This is the first time organics recycling has been
attempted on a subscription (voluntary) basis in the Twin Cities metro
area. The city of Wayzata also collects organics but their system is
different in that only one hauler serves the city and the city negotiates
the contract for its citizens.

How does the collection work?
You will receive a specific 35 gallon cart for your
organic waste. That cart is set out weekly on the curb along with your
other garbage carts on your trash collection day. The organics cart is
emptied into a second garbage truck so if you are enrolled in the organics
program expect to have your trash collected by two different trucks.
Vintage Waste offers drive up service for its
customers. Currently 75% of our organic accounts are picked up at the
house (no additional costs) for this service.
Will this effect my present two-sort recycling of
glass, cans, and newspapers?
No, that program is separate. Continue to recycle
your cans, glass, newspaper, etc. to be picked up every other Thursday.
