| The
City of Orono will not discriminate against or harass any employee or
applicant for employment because of age, race, color, creed, religion,
national origin, sex, marital status, status with regard to public
assistance, sexual orientation or disability. ¡ LCM,

Orono
uses veterans' preference in the hiring process. The Minnesota Supreme
Court has ruled that all cities hiring for a position must award extra
points to veterans, whether or not the city uses a civil service system.
This decision means cities must use some type of grading system compatible
with the state veterans' preference law. That law requires a
five-point preference (10 points if the veteran is disabled) on a 100-point
scale. Additionally, the surviving spouses of deceased veterans are
entitled to receive the same points that their spouses would have received
if they were alive to apply.
¡ LCM, "Handbook for Minnesota Cities," Veterans'
preference in hiring, p. 229.
Note: Resumes will be kept on file
for one year and reviewed upon future job openings.
