Additional Questions ?

What can I use to collect my organics in the kitchen?

You can line your kitchen container with paper bags or certified compostable plastic bags.  There are various size bags depending on the type of kitchen container you decide to use.  The following retailers are selling compostable bags:

Please do not use non-compostable plastics (e.g., plastic grocery bags).  These types of bags and food wrap contaminate finished compost.

What is the size of the organics cart?

The cart is approximately 40 inches high by 20 inches wide and holds 35 gallons

Will my organics cart smell?

Your cart should not smell much more than your present garbage.  To reduce odors, place a paper grocery bag at the bottom to absorb excess moisture. Paper milk or juice cartons work well to collect messier food scraps.  Wash out any liquid present in the cart.

What materials are NOT acceptable?

Please do not discard non-compostable plastics, Styrofoam, glass, metals, foil, diapers, sanitary products, pet waste and leaves and grass in your cart.

Why is yard waste not allowed?

In Orono, there are more efficient ways to recycle leaves and grass.  Please continue mulching on your own property or use the drop off site at public works.
